Lungisani True-man Ngidi (short name is Lungi Ngidi) is recognized as a South African professional cricketer; he is part of the South African national cricket team. He is hailed for his fast bowling skills that can put the batsman on the back foot.
Early Years
Ngigi was born on 29th March 1996 and he hails from Kloof, Durban. He received scholarships to attend both Highbury Preparatory School and Hilton College School. During his tenure at Hilton College, he developed an interest in cricket and decided to become a cricketer. His coach at Hilton College was Neil Johnson, the former Zimbabwe all-rounder.
Following his graduation from Hilton, Ngidi pursued a Bachelor of Social Sciences course in Industrial Sociology from the University of Pretoria.
Domestic Career
Ngidi has been part of the Northerns cricket team for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup. Also, he was proclaimed the “Africa T20 Player of the Year” by Cricket South Africa in July 2016.
Later, he was acquired by Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 IPL auction that was hosted in January 2018.
Even he was bought by the Delhi Capitals squad in February 2022 at the 2022 IPL tournament auction.
Ngidi was also named in both the Tshwane Spartans’ team for the first-ever edition of the Mzansi Super League T20 tournament in October 2018 and the Tshwane Spartans team for the 2019 Mzansi Super League in September 2019.
International Career
Ngidi’s Twenty20 International (T20I) debut came on 20th January 2017 in the match against South Africa and Sri Lanka; he was awarded the Man of the Match here.
He made his Test debut as part of the South Africa Test Squad in the second Test match against India, which was held on 13th January 2018.
Moreover, he forayed into the One Day International (ODI) game format during South Africa’s One Day International squad in the series against India. His ODI debut came in the South Africa Vs India match that was held on 7th February 2018.
Achievements
Ngidi was included in the names of the five Cricketers of the Year during the 2018 South African Cricket Annual Awards. In addition, he won the ODI and T20I Cricketer of the Year awards at South Africa’s annual awards ceremony that was held in July 2020.
